Minding the Things of God

Listen to Nick read the Firestarter and the reading.
Last week was a blow to Peter’s pride. This week, Jesus literally blows away all the religious authorities as he overturns the moneychangers in the Temple. As a karate chop, Jesus powerfully breaks into “the system,” so that something new, something exciting and life-giving can come in its place—his very own life.
The Temple of the Father had become a slaughterhouse. The profanity of business was set up in the most sacred place for a Jew, the Temple. Fearlessly, Jesus abandons himself to the Father’s will.
Perhaps Jesus flashes back to the age of twelve when he remained in the Temple, stunning the leaders amazed by his wisdom. He remembers telling Mary and Joseph that he must be about his Father’s business.
Does the temple of your life need cleansing? How about the temple of Christ’s body, the church?

Burning Your Idols

Listen to Nick read the Firestarter and Exodus 31:18-32:14.
God speaks to Moses and gives him the details of the enduring relation that God longs to have with us through the Covenant. However, the people below the mountain enter into full-blown idolatry. Just as a parent who is angry with a child and refers to him or her as the child of the other parent, God does the same when talking with Moses: “Your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves.”
Just when God wants to do the most for the people, they turn away. Can you identify with this? When you get impatient, are there any idols that you construct to make up for the absence of feeling God’s presence? Walk by faith, not by feelings. Repent. Throw all the idols that you have into the fire.
This is the second of three parts of the Torah Portion Ki Tissa (Take a Census)
Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations read only this part this year,
as also in this Bible plan.
Here is the entire portion in all three parts.
