Enemies Brought to a Halt

Rejoice in the wisdom of Jesus in his response to the tricks and dilemmas the scribes and Pharisees put before him. Today’s account of the woman caught in adultery has the famous response of Jesus: “Let those who have never sinned throw the first stones!” Jesus takes the very energy of the accusers and hurls it back upon them. He knows that their own sin will convict them.

Jesus’ intimate relation with the Father is revealed in the remainder of the reading. He experiences that union with the Father, which brings the power that comes against all his adversaries.

Remember that you have the Holy Spirit who helps you bring to a halt the attempts of your own enemies to harm you. In Christ, no one can really get at you. The same gift of intimacy that Jesus has with the Father is offered to you. That is all that really matters.

Wider Space for the Fire

As we read on Saturdays from the book of Leviticus, it is forbidden to eat the blood of the animals offered. Blood belongs to God. As in the case of Leviticus, there is a call to holiness that Paul places upon the Colossians. Joy increases as you read the conclusion to this first chapter. There is such spiritual energy in Paul and an unrelenting enthusiasm to share his Christ with everyone. Pray for this same desire. Open yourself to the beauty of the truths expressed here and be set on fire with need for a wider space for burning.

Someone today needs your fervor, so that his or her spirit can catch fire with yours. Be watchful in prayer for this person and others.

Feelings as Prayer-Seeds

Listen to the weeping of God’s people exiled in Babylonia in the 6th century B.C. Tears of anguish, torment, and grief fall into the foreign Kebar River. Now walk with them as tears become shouts of joy as these freed pilgrims make their way once again to the Holy City. As a burst dam, joy explodes.

Exile—is there a sense in which you have been “deported to some foreign land” and yearn to return to the joy of being free and of being who you are in God’s sight? Lent is the season to learn the disciplines that will bring you freedom. For example, learn how to deal with your anger when you allow yourself to be manipulated by those whose will you do instead of God’s.

Let your true feelings fall into the ground as prayer-seeds. The harvest of God’s comforting presence will flower.
