With the death of Jesus, the veil separating heaven and earth is lifted. Total access to God is restored once again as God makes a new creation in and through the risen Jesus.

The world for John is that autonomous, self-centered, exploitive reality remaining in darkness. The world has constructed a veil once again, obscuring the vision of God. The only vision that the world has is the narcissistic gaze into its own face. No wonder the world cannot receive Jesus … it does not even see him!

On Pentecost, the full release of the Holy Spirit comes upon the disciples, freeing them from all connection with the world. No longer manipulated by fear of what the world can do, boldness and expansive joy fill their hearts. Join the crowd of those who receive Jesus in the Holy Spirit today and forever.

 Having passed beyond his impulsive nature to an expression of profound and total love for Jesus, Peter reverts for a moment to yet another reactive question about the beloved disciple: “What about this man?” Jesus’ final words to Peter and to us in the Gospel of John have the jolting reminder that it is none of Peter’s business.

This is the week of prayerful waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit, the nine days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost. Spend time with the Lord about the unique call that the Lord has placed upon you to be renewed at Pentecost. Do not be distracted by the call given to others; be inspired by them. Keep your eyes upon Jesus, following him in your special call. Remember: what you are called to do is no one else’s business but yours and God’s.

Specifics of these regulations no longer pertain in our lives. However, as we read this final passage from the Book of Leviticus, ponder again upon the Hebrew qadosh, the word for all the English expressions used for “dedication.”

Something or someone is holy when set apart and dedicated for the things of God. As the Easter season ends, remember that you are to be set apart for God, to live in the new temple of the Body of Christ.

Jesus’ disciples waited in the Temple after he ascended into heaven, waiting for the Holy Spirit to come upon them and to fill them completely.

Only God is holy. However, you become holy and wholly the Lord’s when the “parcel of land” that you live in is the Holy Body of Christ.
