The beginning of the season of Epiphany saw us contemplating the Baptism of Jesus. Lent opens, with what took place immediately after—the temptation of Jesus in the desert. Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us. (2 Cor. 5:21)

The wilderness recalls the wanderings of our ancestors, time of temptation and sin for them. They complained about bread, fell into idolatry, and tested the Lord. Jesus confronted the same three temptations. However, Jesus did what our ancestors did not—meet the attacks with the sword of the Spirit, the living Word of God, here found in Deuteronomy 6—8.

Today and everyday, let a word or phrase from the daily passage rise forth that you can use as a weapon against the temptations you face. Come against them with God’s Word, and you will not fall.

The Holy Spirit brings the presence of the Lord when the Word is read with hearts opened in faith. You are going to meet the Lord in the reading.

Four sacred colors mentioned can be symbolic of four days of the week: GOLD for Sundays, the Lord’s Day; BLUE for Saturdays, the Sabbath, and the Torah; PURPLE for Mondays: the Prophets; SCARLET for Fridays:

the words of Jesus, his blood and the Gospel.

The tabernacle is completed—the glory of the Lord comes down.

Up to this point in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus alone demonstrates the power of the Kingdom over demons and diseases. Now this power passes into the hearts and hands of the Twelve Apostles. They have left all to follow Jesus. They have nothing, yet possess everything. These powerless ones by the world’s standards begin to share all the power of the creating and saving God present in their Master.

They move outward from the center, bringing the presence of the One whom they love. As the hands of a clock that radiate outward and fill the twelve hours of the day, so these twelve fill their world with the presence and power of Jesus.

This same presence and power is ready to move further into you. Are you ready for your gifts to multiply just as the loaves and fishes?
