The Thread of Connection

With the passing of one generation, it is time to tell the story. This is sacred history brought up to the present.

History makes a people one. We step back and see the past as a whole, with connectives of grace and separations by sin. For Moses, this moment serves to bring the new generation of people up to the present by a vivid recall of where they have been. The final phase of the journey needs the energy of what God has done— and what others have undone by complaining, false worship, and strife.

The Book of Deuteronomy is the thread of connection from past to future. Moses, the great leader and instructor, gathers all that he has received into one book, leaving it as a legacy from the generation gathered then to listen, to the present generation gathered across the Jewish world. In our plan of reading, Christians join with this community to listen to the one Spirit of God speak to us today with words that have come down to us from thousands of years.

Deuteronomy 2:2–30

This is the second of three parts of the Torah Portion Devarim (The Words)
Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations read only this part this year,
as also in this Bible plan.
Here is the entire portion in all three parts.

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship
throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy
that are read each year beginning with autumn.

Confessing Jesus, the Christ

Pray in total faith for your healing. If this does not happen according to your expectations, claim it still, accepting what is happening as a stage in the process. There is a powerful precedent for this in the healing of the blind man.

Peter receives the gift of extraordinary faith, and then soon lapses into his old self. He presumes to rebuke Jesus about the issue of his coming suffering. Jesus names the adversary, Satan—the one who comes to disrupt and block the powerful movement of God’s redemptive love in Christ.

Pray to keep the confession of Jesus as the Christ, fresh and free in your own heart. The Anointed One lives inside you and longs to share this anointing for ministry with you.

Mark 8:22–38

Spiritual Warfare

I have good news and bad news. The bad news: whatever you are struggling against is bigger than you are. The good news: God gives you all the power of heaven to come against all adversity. Take command of this power as you fight the spiritual wars in your life. Jesus won the victory for you. Apply the blood of the cross— the sign of triumph for every circumstance. Bind every thought or idea as a hostage, unless it is in keeping with the Word of Christ.

The root of our word “obedience” comes from the Latin, audire, whence the English, “audio.” It means first to listen, then to act accordingly. May it be so in your life.
