The greatest week of the year has come, Holy Week. Hour by hour, follow the movement of Jesus as your salvation and mine is won. You might read the Passion according to Mark throughout the day, taking portions of it as each hour strikes.

Go near the cross. Do not shy away and be distant. Look what happened when Peter did that! When that nightly hour struck with the cockcrow, he remembered his denial; Peter’s heart was pierced along with Jesus’s.

Remember the obvious: Christians throughout the world are entering into Holy Week; pray for them. May the palm you bring home be a sign of loyalty to Christ.

Leviticus describes the sacrificial system, which the Lord gave to Moses in the tabernacle. The priests and the Levites preserved it, hence its title from the Greek name. In Hebrew, it is called Vayikra, meaning “And He Called,” taken from the first words of the book.

Since the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 A.D., no sacrifice has been offered; nothing is done today as described. Jesus has become the one complete sacrifice that has gathered all the varieties we read about in this book.

The call to holiness is what makes Leviticus a book of great value. The various kinds of offerings focus upon aspects of life still important to address. Today’s reading has to do with the Peace Offering (expiation) and the Sin Offering (restoring purity to the sanctuary.) Move beyond the details of what is offered to why.

Raising Lazarus from the dead is the incident that provokes the religious leaders to plot actively for the death of Jesus. See the irony. If Jesus has the power to bring another person back to life, would he not also have the power over his own life? Jesus gives another “I AM” name to Martha and Mary: “I AM the resurrection and the life.”

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Prepare now by rededicating your whole life to the Lord, being one with him in the movements of the coming holiest week of the year.

“I will raise him up on the last day.” One interpretation of this phrase is to see the “last day” as Good Friday. If you are clinging to the cross when Jesus dies, you will rise with him. For John, all this happens at once on that great Friday of our salvation.
