Love—Beyond, Yet Within

If you have any love in you at all, it is because God, who is Love, is present to you through the Holy Spirit. God does not indwell in us as a reward for our loving; rather God’s presence makes it possible to love.

Love is super-natural; it is beyond our nature and us. Yes, it’s easy to love those who love you, as Matthew 5:46 declares; but love goes beyond egoism and personal attraction and preference, giving a divine quality to our lives, not coming from ourselves, but from God.

The theme of “abiding” or “indwelling” is a central one for John, both in the letters and in his Gospel. Take each verse and let their truths sink deep. Brood over this teaching: “Perfect love casts out fear.” The Lord of love dwells in you, burning away all fear until you are aglow with love.

Absolute Confidence in God

Do you ever feel like wanting to run away from it all? You are in good company; so does David in today’s psalm. He wishes he could just fly away like a dove to a wilderness somewhere. What makes things even worse for him is that his own friends are betraying him.

David expresses his anger fully, even imagining the destruction of his enemies. However, as though moved by how dangerous his thoughts are, David reaches out even more “dangerously” into pure trust and confidence in the Lord. As a seesaw tilting from one person shifting and the other suddenly bouncing high, so awareness of the power of God lifts David to the heights. The goodness and faithfulness of the Lord is greater than any wickedness.

Pause at morning, noon and night and at other times of transition in the day. Immediately, cast your burdens before the Lord, lest they overwhelm you.

Grief or Joy of the Lord

With all his strength, Samson was weak when it came to lust for women. He had no business letting his attraction for foreign women compel him into marrying one—and much less, the treacherous Delilah. Samson gave her the secret of his strength and he lost it. The tragedy became even more pathetic when Samson thought he still had the anointing of the Lord, but did not.

Feel the power of these words: “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10); “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). With God at work in you, you need no other power. May you never grieve the Holy Spirit by being unfaithful to the anointing of the Lord on your life.
