God’s Tent in Our Hearts

Jewish people have three special celebrations in the course of the year.  Passover usually takes place when Christians celebration the Resurrection of Jesus; Pentecost, which Christians celebrate as the coming of the Holy Spirit, and an autumn festival called Tabernacles.   While there is no Christian celebration that is linked to this festival, we all recall our ancestors who made their way in the desert living in tents in that great journey from slavery to freedom called the Exodus.  Jewish children have lots of fun making little tents around the house to recall the Exodus, and the tents that they made along the way.

In John’s Gospel, 1:14, he tells his that the Word (Jesus) pitched his tent among us!  God is with us at every moment in his tent in our hearts.

Leviticus 23:33-36

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy that are read each year beginning with autumn.

Commotion after Communion

Jesus faces one of the Twelve about to betray him, another who will deny even knowing Jesus at all. Added to this, all of them argue with each other about who is the greatest among them. Betrayal, denial, and pride mix themselves together, playing themselves out among the most intimate of Jesus disciples.

Listen in upon the commotion at the Last Supper—this, just minutes after the Apostles had received Holy Communion for the very first time. Contemplate the scene with all its shifts of energy and focus—from communion to commotion, from fellowship to loneliness, from pure love to agony, from friendship to betrayal, from the One who sets others free to the One is arrested. Will you be awake for at least an hour, to the full Jesus who is praying in his Spirit within you right now?

Seven Bowls of Judgment

Images from the Exodus are mixed into the seven bowls of judgment prepared for those committed to evil and blasphemy. The Song of Moses sung after the crossing of the Red Sea and the song at the end of his life recently sung on the Sabbath reading, keep the focus upon God’s ultimate triumph over all evil. There is simply no way that evil is going to be victorious; God’s love will triumph.

Do not be afraid of the images of the blood that flows in the plagues listed. Indeed, God’s love and victory over evil began on the cross where the sea of God’s own blood in Christ streamed down for the salvation of us all. The plagues of wrath will come to an end; God’s love will not.
