Yearning for God

The millstone of persecution presses at David’s soul, grinding it into the flour of prayer. The burdens of life loosen more and more supplications. The outpourings stretch him to God. Waves of comfort crescendo as David yearns for God’s help. The very longing for God is a sign of God’s presence.

Find those points of connection between you and David. Does the Lord bring anyone to mind who is similarly burdened? A fervent praying of this psalm will be the conduit for the stream of grace to reach that one’s heart.

If only Rehoboam had prayed this psalm of his grandfather, David, with all his heart! Will you pray the psalm?

Humble Before Grace

The grace of God, so abundant and flowing in David and Solomon, ceases in the life of the next son and king, Rehoboam. Arrogance, a vice that gives a halt to grace and is a scandal to others, seethes in the heart of David’s grandson, rending asunder what God had put together—one sacred people. The evil of power and control turns the one sacred river of life, into two; Judah and Israel will separate.:

The united cover of grace now lost, Judah becomes vulnerable to an attack from the age-old enemy of God’s designs, Egypt. The threat offers an opportunity for Rehoboam to become humble, opening himself once again to some measure of God’s saving help.

Anything fresh come to mind? Become humble before the saving hand of the Lord upon your life.

Total Freedom in the Spirit

Three more visions awaken the spirit of prophecy in Zechariah, making eight in all. An immense scroll, fifteen by thirty feet, wafts thieves and perjurers away in something like a magic carpet. Wickedness flies away in a basket. Connecting with yesterday’s Gospel, this is the removal of the scandals, the traps set for God’s people. The image of the four chariots sweeping from the four directions continues images of movement and completeness, as God’s power envelopes the entire earth. The divine gifts of kingship and priesthood are now united in one crown for Joshua, a messianic figure.

What do these images do for you? Is there anything yet coming between you and the Lord Christ who wants nothing less than your total freedom in the Spirit?
