Healing Tears (Audio Revised)

“The Return of the Prodigal Son” by James Tissot.

Many years ago while on a thirty-day retreat of renewal, the Lord ministered to me in a special way while meditating on the Parable of the Prodigal Son. I was sitting beside the exquisite Carrousel in Spokane, Washington, listening to old time favorites from the band organ. All of a sudden, I heard “Cruising Down the River on a Sunday Afternoon.” This had been our “family song” when I was a boy. Tears began to well up in my eyes in this instant connection to my past. I experienced the love of the Lord that was always with me, even when I had sometimes grabbed at the inheritance of grace in my life and squandered it.

The merry-go-round became a symbol for the party that the Father was throwing for me, as I, his prodigal son, returned. The music distracted me from the pitfall of guilt and I wept in healing. May the Parable do something similar for you.

The Bond of Faith

Strong words are addressed to the first recipients of this letter, those on the verge of renouncing the faith they once had in Jesus. To save those about to make the suicidal plunge into apostasy was likely the motive for writing the letter.

Though you may not identify with those about to renounce Jesus, remember what happened to Peter in a moment of fear and weakness. Does your life-style and activities tell the world that you are a disciple of Jesus? Is your heart as well as your lips centered upon the Lord? Pray for a deepening of your commitment to Jesus in everything. Intercede prayerfully for the countless numbers at this very moment whose suffering and persecution would cease if they would renounce their faith in Jesus. They need the bond of your faith to uphold theirs.
