 Disciples of John the Baptist become disciples of Jesus, one by one. With each added disciple, there is a gradual revelation about who Jesus is, culminating in, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

In your heart, paint the picture of the exchange of the disciples from John to Jesus. Follow the direction of the finger of John pointing him out as the Lamb of God. Imagine you are drifting to Jesus as a new disciple. The Holy Spirit graces you with the gift of adherence to him; this is John’s understanding of “belief.” Spend the day with Jesus and the others. In your journal, write a dialogue between you and him, as though you had just met. What words of intimacy flow between you and Jesus?

This passage is proclaimed at the Easter Vigil, on Holy Saturday. It is the central festival for us as Christians and Jews, since it describes that primary move of God that resulted in our ancestors nor longer being slaves in Egypt. Passover is the paradigm for our freedom. It is during this festival that Jesus, the true Paschal Lamb was sacrificed. His is the blood of the covenant that truly sets us free.

In 12:22, the Lord prescribes that hyssop, a shrub-like plant, be dipped into the blood of the lamb, and be smeared on the doorpost of the house. It is hyssop that was dipped into vinegar and brought to the lips of Jesus on the cross (John 19:29–30). This detail of John is not without meaning. Then Jesus exclaims, “It is finished.” Jesus won complete freedom for us by shedding his blood on the cross. Smear the doorposts of your heart with the saving blood of Jesus.

 Water has various symbolic meanings in the Bible. In the Book of Genesis, it is a sign of chaos. As the Spirit brooded over the waters, limits to water’s movements were set beyond which they could not go, as the dry land appeared.

Over the waters of the Jordan, the Spirit broods once again, appearing over Jesus as he is baptized. The chaos of sin is limited as Jesus rises up on dry land. The space between earth and heaven opens and the voice of God is heard. Just as the dove came to rest when the waters of the flood receded, so does the Spirit rest on Jesus.

A new time of salvation came with Jesus’s baptism. He rose from the dead, that is the waters of sin, and brought you to new life in God’s Spirit. Rest on the dry land with Jesus on the other side of the Jordan. Follow him in the desert of temptations. Be with him as ministry begins.
