Urging Holiness

“What will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?” These words that Peter personally heard from Jesus are echoed here in today’s reading. (Cf. Mark 8:36.) The chapter stirs a call to holiness in us, as we conclude our reflections on 1 and 2 Peter.

What do you do in your life that has value beyond physical permanency? What are the priceless spiritual features about you that are not destroyed by fire, but rather purified by it? You can take these qualities with you into eternal life.

I read the following on a bumper sticker: Some who put off their salvation until the 11th hour, find that they are dead at 10:30 PM!

Greater Is the One Within

Tap here for a meditation on Psalm 107.

Notice the action words of God in this prayer that begins the fifth and final book in the collection of psalms. God moves into our lives with the same saving energy as God did to our Jewish ancestors long ago. Pause at each verb and let your soul receive right now the timeless actions of God.

God’s protection at sea is celebrated from verse 23. I wonder if Jesus’s disciples caught in the storm on the lake in the Gospels recalled this part of the psalm. Greater is the One in your boat than all the storms from without that rage and rock to frighten you. To insure that you are in touch with Jesus within who is saving you, I suggest that you repeat the refrain of this psalm as each hour of your day strikes.

Beckonings of the Lord

Feelings of completion, fulfillment, satisfaction, celebration, and community flow from the images of wisdom. The power of poetry takes the abstract, investing it with all the vividness of the five senses.

Engage your senses as you read about the ways of wisdom, once again contrasted with the ways of the harlot. The Lord gives us our senses so that we can find God through them, and with God, God’s plan for us.

Wisdom is a practical way of living. It is not intended to fill the mind with a gluttony of ideas, but rather to bathe the heart and ready it do what the Lord wants. Read this chapter repeatedly until you fully catch the Lord’s beckonings to you this day.
