Resting with the Shepherd

Christians of ancient Rome buried their dead and worshipped in underground chambers called catacombs. The earliest images of art found on those dark walls are drawings of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The entrances to the catacombs were reminders that Jesus is the door to the Sheepfold. There Christians were safe from the emperor-thief intent upon destroying God’s beloved ones.

Today is “Good Shepherd Sunday.” There is an ancient tradition of reading from John 10 on this center Sunday of the Easter Season. We read three sections of this chapter in the three-year cycle.

On Tuesday we will begin to read from the Song of Songs where the beloved of the Shulamite woman is a shepherd. Rest in the love of the Good Shepherd who came to life again.

John 10:1–10

The Day of Atonement

This is the most sacred day of the year for a Jew, usually occurring in early October. This is the only time when the priest would enter into The Holy of Holies.

Every day, every moment, you can be in The Holy of Holies; it is your own heart where Jesus lives. Jesus has gathered all the elements of the Old Law into himself. Go to that place within where you are most you and where you are perhaps most hurting. The Lord longs to meet you there. Be with the Lord. It is holy there, because you have been made so by the Lord’s presence.

Leviticus 16

This is the first of three parts of the Torah Portion Ahare Moth (After the Death)
Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations read only this part this year,
as also in this Bible plan.

The Saturday passages follow the reading list that Jewish people use in their synagogue worship
throughout the world. They are taken from
“The Torah,” the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy
that are read each year beginning with autumn.

Miracle Bread

Jesus could have turned the stones around him into bread to feed the crowd; this was the temptation of the devil when Jesus was hungry at the end of his forty-day fast at the beginning of his ministry. Instead, Jesus takes what food is there. The lunch of a young boy becomes the seed for the miracle.

Bring what you have to the Lord. God has made you good and can multiply that goodness to feed many. Feed your spirit with the Word of the Lord who hands you miracle bread of his body right now. Walk with him on top of the turbulent waters of your life. He wishes to bring you in the Easter season through a new Exodus to life on the other side of anguish and pain.

John 6:1–21
