There is joy in Isaiah’s announcement of a remnant that will survive the devastation of Assyria. The glory of God rises as God uses the very instruments of war as symbols of victory. The list of vulnerable cities that lay in the path of Assyria serves to give the people strength in the face of the indignation of God against the adversary. God will avenge all enemies.

All enemies—especially those from the spiritual world of darkness and the forces set against you. They are nothing when it comes to the power of God. You will find verses of Isaiah as faith-tools to tear down the strongholds of the Enemy that may yet lurk within you. Go to that place in your heart where the remnant lives—the part of you that is faithful to the Lord because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon your life.

Paul plunges into the midst of his argument about faith vs. works. Catch the passion beneath these words of doctrine—the burning of his heart feeding the enlightenment of his mind.

He shakes the Galatians and us by a series of six questions. These reverberate within so that the joyous answers given by Paul may find a home in you.

Here lie the essentials of Christian teaching: we are made right with God not by what we do, but by what we allow Christ to do in us. As a great magnet, Jesus draws the curse of sin and the law to himself. The cross crushes the curse.

Read slowly Paul’s understanding of the Law. Commentaries will help. May you fly by faith far beyond the law, into the freedom and love of Jesus.

David finds a time and a place of respite in his flight from King Saul and his retinue that are pursuing David. Once again, he discovers by faith that the God of his heart will prevail. All that frightens David flees from him. He stops, gathers strength in this psalm given to him and to us by the Holy Spirit.

Take time apart today to pray this psalm over and over until its cumulative effect has all fears leave, bringing you to full awareness of the deep truths of the psalm. The power of God will lead you to safety.

Jesus emerges from the chaotic waters and is ready to bring victory. He is God’s beloved Son; listen to him. The Holy Spirit of God is praying this song of victory deep within you.

In the Magi, Gentiles have free access to the living God in Christ. Here the great apostle to the Gentiles, Paul, depicts the essence of his call: Gentiles have total access to the grace of God without having to fulfill the prescriptions of the law. We catch a glimpse of the conflict in personal terms, imagining what must have been the sparks that flew between Peter and Paul.

Along with the first chapter, this one completes the first of three parts of the letter—the call and credential of Paul himself. The end of the chapter presents the point of doctrine, which Paul develops in chapters 3 and 4: the human person is justified by faith, and not be works.

Memorize verse 20 and let it fall upon your heart as the coals of fire upon the lips of Isaiah—as the burning embers of frankincense, gift of the Magi.

A Heavy Heart’s Answered Prayer

God’s grace in the shining star penetrates the earth, revealing the fragile goodness and hardened arrogance that lurk there. Here in the middle of Epiphany Week, David’s bed of suffering evidences the struggle between good and evil. Verse after verse come as waves of feeling expressing the extent of David’s pain. However, the heart of this man extends even more, stretching his prayer to the utmost until he knows that God is answering him.

The coming of Christ brings turmoil to resistant ones. The more you turn your life over to God, the more persecution you will receive. Expect it! However, expect all the more that God will bring you beyond your pain to the triumphant experience by faith of God’s love and power in your life. Nothing nor anyone can take this away from you.
