Letters to Seven Churches

Thursday of the Last Week in Kingdomtide
Revelation 2—3

Nick reads the one-minute introduction.

As you read these letters to the seven churches, catch the essence of the point of John’s writing to each of them. Evils that attack the church from within beset them.

Does your heart nod, acknowledging any of these points as applying to you? If so, repent. Also, hear these letters as though you yourself were one of the churches to whom John is writing. Thus your repentance will not only be personal, but communal, as you ask the Lord’s forgiveness for how the Church today has fallen into the same areas of sin as these early communities. Intercede for the Body of Christ as you read and pray.

An evening supper with the Lord in the Book of Revelation marks this last Thursday of Kingdomtide.

Thursdays are dedicated to the New Testament, except the Gospels. During the season of Kingdomtide this year, we read 1 Corinthians.

Sharing the Vision

Thursday of the Twelfth Week in Kingdomtide
Revelation 1

Nick reads the one-minute introduction.

A year of grace is ending with the beginning of the last book of the Bible, Revelation. John reveals the visions he received from the Lord about the events between the first and second coming of Jesus. The contents of the book consist of seven groups, seven being the symbolic number of perfection and fullness.

Not only picture the images, but also receive them by faith just as they are revealed to John. Find comfort in the assurance of Christ’s final victory over evil. He is already reigning. The only power that Satan has is to deceive us into thinking that the victory has not taken place. There is glorious hope here. Read in triumph.

The Bible begins with day and night, the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It ends with day only, and the River of Life. Darkness and evil are gone. Only grace flows from the river.

Images of permanent abundance characterize this final chapter of the Bible. While there is no physical temple in space, there is a reference to time in the twelve crops of fruit harvested in each of the twelve months. Time, not space, survives as the link that makes eternity descend into the months and days of our lives.

The final words of the Bible echo deeply in the emptied stillness of the heart. As the clarion cry, “Come Lord Jesus” sounds and fades away, the stillness of Advent is days away. Prepare for an ever more complete coming of the Lord Jesus into your life.

Heaven and earth are bonded together in the striking image of verse 2. Evil is forever defeated. Wickedness no longer impedes the sweet commerce intended to take place between heaven and earth. It is the ultimate answer to the plea in the Lord’s Prayer that God’s “will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

The image of the flow between heaven and earth is similar to the dream of Jacob in Genesis 28:12, reiterated in John 1:51 with the image of “angels ascending and descending.”

As you receive the images of the New Jerusalem, which abound in purity and perfection, may you rest in victorious peace at the heart of the Church. This is the temple.

Some people in remote parts of the world did not receive the news of the end of World War II until long after the victorious countries held parades of celebration. In somewhat the same manner, John keeps a tension between the victory in Jesus already won, and its not yet realization in all levels of creation. A new thousand-year period is upon us, heightening the awareness of the millennium of which John speaks.

There are various interpretations of the thousand-year period of Jesus’ reign. However, beyond calendars and literal verifications of the events in Revelation, the images of the triumph of good and the defeat of evil are meant to work there way into our lives until the Word of God’s victory touches the heart with praise.

Psalm 148 of yesterday continues its energy of praise into today’s chapter.

The Joys of Water and Fire

Our reading today contains the only times that the word “Alleluia” is used in the New Testament. Alleluia—only found elsewhere in the psalms—is sung four times in the first six verses of the reading. Even as the final five psalms begin and end with alleluia, concluding this year of grace, so also does the Book of Revelation mount in songs of joy and praise as God’s final triumph over evil is celebrated.

Listen to the sounds of many waters in the wells of grace that God is sending upward from within you. See the points of fire in the eyes of Jesus against the white background of your day. Once again, be lifted high as Zaccaheus and let the Spirit share with you the fruit of joy as the living waters of grace, flowing as the blood of Jesus, reveal the victory over all the evils that are coming against you. Rededicate yourself to how you are living in the Church, the Bride of Jesus.

No Music from Babylon

Revelation 18

The Christian Martyrs’ Last Prayer, by Jean-Léon Gérôme (1883)

Cruel persecutions from Roman emperors cause the blood of early Christians to flow on the ground of the Coliseum. How true the saying of Tertullian is: “The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians”! Overwhelmed by the tide of evil from this Empire, John receives visions of its ultimate downfall about Babylon, image of Rome.

Arrogance and pride find vicious voice in the expressions of Babylon. However, equally horrific is the fall of the empire of evil. Such visions gave hope to the sufferings of early Christians. May the same be true for you, when evil rises as a tide against you. Believe that the victory has already been won in the blood of the Lamb.

Do you find similarities that contemporary economic and political structures have with Babylon? All systems that stand in the temple of God’s presence boasting in Pharisaic arrogance are doomed to fall. No more music from them!
