Thursdays during the seven-week season of Easter are dedicated to the Acts of the Apostles. St. Luke tells about the early history of the Church. This book is sometimes called the “Gospel of the Holy Spirit,” because the Holy Spirit released into the Church brings about all the wonderful things that take place.
An angel of the Lord appears. We are reminded of other times in the Gospel of Luke when an angel appeared—before Zachariah, the Father of John the Baptist in the very beginning of the Gospel and to Mary, mother of Jesus, shortly afterward. In today’s reading an angel comes to a captain in the Roman army named Cornelius, and later to Peter. God arranges a meeting of the two. God’s love and grace are about to be offered beyond the Jewish people. It’s a big step. Cornelius is the first one outside the Jewish faith to be welcomed into the Church. After him, down through the centuries, come you and me.
Picture yourself as an adult. What sort of person would you like to be when you are fully grown in your faith? Just let your imagination express itself as you fly into the future and dream.
